Come see Girlfriends: A Not So Straight Play, as it was originally conceived. One curly-haired cabaret with a piano as our Honda Civic 98, driving through the USA in 2014. The radio will play as she sings along, from New Orleans, to Texas (for way too long), to Zion, to California.

“Girlfriends” is the true story of her road trip, one she herself didn’t even realize may have been a love story. Watch her play Scout, Olishka, and every wild mechanic they met across their journey. She will learn how to ask for gasoline, how to scare away bobcats, and how to actually inhale when smoking a cigarette. With as much humor as there is heartbreak, remember fondly what it was to be 22: so certain that every feeling is our last.

Come see the one-woman live-music version of “Girlfriends,” this February at OPERA America's National Opera Center.

Girlfriends: The Three-Person Version

With the help of Avery Bargar on keys playing every man they will encounter, and Amanda Montgomery as Olishka, this rendition of the play gives a fully realized memory. Sara Malinowski stars as Scout, a heartbroken 22-year-old who is made mostly of tears and second-hand smoke as she crosses the country with a stranger. Witness the true story of her 2014 Road Trip across the US, where she sang for gasoline, into the canyons, and yelled Shakespeare to discourage bears.

With live music on the piano as they sing with the radio, fall deeper into the world of “Girlfriends”: A Not So Straight Play, at El Barrio’s ArtSpace PS109.

Why get breakup bangs when you could cross the country with a stranger?

Travel with two “girlfriends” across the U.S. in a 98 Honda Civic in 2014 with $200. Watch while they explore everything from sex to sandstone to Shakespeare to singing for gasoline, and see if they ever reach the peak of their truth.

For when you don’t yet know how to heal, but you know how to drive.

A true story that starts with a lie.

Come see a staged reading, first-time one-woman rendition of Girlfriends, followed by a talkback with the playwright.

A new play by Sara Malinowski & a staged reading by the Letter of Marque. In 2014, Scout didn’t have words for her heartbreak, her queerness, or for her plan to cross the USA. Nevertheless, she drove ‘til she found something beautiful. A true story of a break-up reaction so absurd you could write a play about it 10 years later. This play is for anyone who’s ever told a lie with their whole chest, for the millennial bisexual who may find this play too little too late, for any traveler who’s been frustrated locating the correct section of their physical map of Texas, and for anyone who’s ever taken Shakespeare personally. A play that can’t help but wonder, were they “girlfriends?”

Drive with two strangers from NYC to California, with music that shifts from country to blues to folk as they travel from New Orleans, to Texas, to California.  If you’ve ever been heartbroken, brave, or somewhere beautifully in-between, come see a one-time developmental reading of Girlfriends, a not so straight play.

This November 20th, at WOW CAFE Theatre - Save the Date.

Written by Sara Malinowski

With a bit of help from Shakespeare, Bob Dylan, Norah Jones, Joni Mitchell, Gene Autry, and Doris Day.
